The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) has been in news for the last several months due to its syllabus rationalization and subsequent removal of some topics from its books.

This decision to reduce the syllabus has triggered a huge debate among teachers, parents and policy makers. According to media reports, the NCERT has now reportedly removed scientific topics like Darwin’s theory and the Periodic Table from the Class 10 CBSE Science books.

In particular, Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, Origin of Life on Earth, Human Evolution and Heredity as well as Periodic Classification of Elements have been removed.

In response to this query, NCERT has stated that these chapters were temporarily removed during the pandemic as part of the syllabus rationalization process. The chapter titled “Evolution and Heredity” has now been renamed to simply “Heredity”.

Due to this the decision to remove these chapters was taken, students can still read about these topics provided they choose subjects related to these topics in class 11th and 12th.

Explaining the reason for the removal of these courses, NCERT said that the decision to remove these chapters has been taken due to the difficulty of these chapters, overlapping of the same content and the lack of importance of these content in today’s context.

While some have questioned the move, many have shared links of new books, stating that the topic has not been removed but shifted to the Class 11 syllabus.
