ISRO Empowering India’s Space Community with Essential Knowledge
ISRO Workshop on Space Situational Awareness & Space Traffic Management (SSA &STM)
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to host a transformative workshop focused on Space Situational Awareness & Space Traffic Management (SSA &STM). This enlightening event, scheduled for October 12th to 14th, 2023, at the distinguished ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru, is tailored exclusively for Indian students, researchers, and faculty members.
A Comprehensive Dive into SSA & STM
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) encompasses a comprehensive understanding of the space environment, involving the precise locations, orbits, and functions of man-made objects in space, alongside natural phenomena such as space weather, asteroids, and comets.
SSA is indispensable for averting collisions among celestial entities and mitigating the impact of space debris, ensuring secure, stable, and sustainable space activities. Meanwhile, Space Traffic Management (STM) is the orchestrated process that guarantees the safe and efficient operation of all space objects.
STM includes collecting and analyzing SSA data, devising collision avoidance strategies, and executing those procedures. Moreover, STM carries the responsibility of proper space debris disposal.
Empowering Responsible Space Endeavors
The significance of SSA and STM is pivotal for any entity venturing into space activities, whether governmental agencies, private corporations, start-ups, or academic institutions.
These facets demand substantial human expertise and dedicated observational facilities—such as radars, telescopes, and space-based platforms—to accurately determine the orbital details of space entities, on both national and international scales.
Notably, ISRO has established the “ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM)” to provide comprehensive services for safeguarding India’s invaluable space assets.
ISRO’s Vision: A Safer Tomorrow
Aligned with its aim to foster private sector engagement in the space domain, ISRO acknowledges the urgency of cultivating expertise in the domains of SSA and STM.
This collective knowledge isn’t just about creating future career prospects; it’s about establishing space as a safer, more dependable, and sustainable arena for upcoming endeavors.
This forthcoming workshop embodies this vision, featuring illuminating technical presentations by distinguished ISRO scientists and engineers specializing in SSA & STM, as well as interactive exchanges with Directors from various ISRO Centres.
Calling All Space Enthusiasts
This workshop extends a warm invitation to students pursuing B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech/M.Sc/PhD courses in disciplines related to space science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Engineering & Technology from esteemed Indian institutions.
Faculty members from Indian academic institutes are also encouraged to participate. The selection process is based on academic excellence and/or an online quiz assessment.
